I like this philosophy...whisper, don't roar.

I like to listen to my team. To hear them out. To find out what makes them tick and where their passions lie. Then I like to have them micro-lead an area within their passion. I stay close if needed to provide the bumper rails to keep them within a certain area, but I give them latitude too, because they come up with ideas, implemenations, and perspectives I have never thought of.

I like to look at leadership as being part of, not over. I work "with" people. I go out of the department and give credit to the individuals who came up with the great idea or design or implementation. But I say "we did it" if the report is that a mistake was made.

I believe it was Vince Lombardi that said, "The mark of a good leader is one who takes less than his share of the credit and more than his share of the blame." My dad had that sitting on his desk when I was a teenager. I've never forgotten it.

Hey Dan! Too many times our services are loud and "Ichabod." We are left with only the anointing of human personality. This is not what we are seeking. In fact, I dont have a clear picture of what God wants a church service to look like. In Acts, they prayed, ate/communion, the prophets had a turn at speaking, and they gave to the poor. In next 1500 years a magical quality developed in the eucharist/communion and in the next 500 years speakers took on the central role of church services.

I am weak and broken and Im sure most Christians are too. It stands to reason that our services will be this also a majority of the time. However, God is not like us at all. I feel that from a weak and broken posture with an overwhelming humility manifested as strict obedience to the word of God, perhaps Jesus or various members of the heavenly host may decide to pay us a visit in our services. That will definitely change the order of worship. And if it ever did happen, I would only see it as a confirmation, not a lever to have more exciting services.

Wow! now this caught my attention and it really made me think about how many times I've used those exact phrases to express something "church related". Thank you for speaking truth - we need it, even if it hurts a little.

The title of this article, "Surfing the Edge of Chaos" makes much more sense as its title then many might know. Being a surfer myself, I know the "edge of chaos" is the ideal place for the best waves possible, and right where every surfer wants to be. When everything is calm and serene, there are absolutly no waves (i.e., don't bring your board to Clearwater Beach). But when a catagory 4 hurrican is sitting about 200 miles off the coast, you will see blue skys, light off-shore winds, and the most amazing huge waves ever.

But if that hurrican comes onshore, forget about it. The idea is to stay on the edge of chaos, not in the middle of it. If we will follow Christ's leading for our lives, staying grounded thourgh God's word, we will experinece everything he has for us. We just have to put our trust in Him and Him alone. Thanks Dan for the great encouragement!

Now after having received my degree in theology through the University of Hard Knocks I've learned a little bit about wisdom. After many years of praying for it, I came to realize she is simply a summation of the experiences God allows in our lives, unfortunately many of those early experiences were lost on me. So as you surf that 'permeable, intermediate' edge of chaos, I pray you will relish every experience God allows in your lives.

Wow! What an amazing topic! I am in awe of the words on this page... we have forgotten how to discover and it's a shame. The mysteries of life are our opportunities to discover our creativity I've always thought and in that we see our uniqueness as individuals. I love this thought! Amazing piece here people!
